Tip of the Week: You Need to Know These YouTube Keyboard Shortcuts

Websites also make excellent use of keyboard shortcuts you use every day to improve your productivity. YouTube is an excellent source of entertainment and education, so today, we want to help you get more value out of it with keyboard shortcuts. Here are some of the best that you should know.

Here’s Your Go-To List of YouTube Keyboard Shortcuts

These aren’t the only shortcuts to consider, but they are the most important and (probably) the most useful.

  • Pause and Play a Video
    • Spacebar OR the K key
    • If you hold down the key, your video will start in slow motion.
  • Jump to the Start of a Video
    • Press the 0 key or Home key
  • Skip to the End or Start Next Video
    • Press the End key
    • If you are watching a video on a playlist, you’ll automatically jump to the next video.
  • Fast Forward or Rewind
    • For 5-second intervals: Press the left or right arrow keys.
    • For 10-second intervals: Fast forward with the L key, Rewind with the J key.
  • Skip Ahead by Percentage
    • Use the numbered keys (1-9) to skip ahead to that percentage of the video. For example, the 5 Key would have you jump to the 50% point of the video.
  • Change Video Playback Speed
    • Slow down a video by holding down Shift and pressing the Comma key.
    • Speed up a video by holding down Shift and pressing the Period key.
  • Switch to Full-Screen or Theater Mode
    • Press the F key to make the video full-screen or normal mode, depending on what you’re currently set to.
    • Press the T key to toggle between Theater Mode.
  • Turn Off (or On) Closed Captions and Subtitles
    • Press the C key to toggle subtitles and captions on or off.
  • Turn the Volume Up or Down
    • Turn the volume up with the up arrow and down with the down arrow.
    • You can also mute the video by pressing the M key.
